Kansas City, MO-- New York Yankees' closer Mariano Rivera, tore a knee ligament during batting practice earlier today.

Manager Joe Girardi made the announcement after the Yankees lost to the Kansas City Royals.

Rivera, baseball's all-time saves leader, was shagging fly balls during batting practice, when his knee buckled as he hit the warning track.  He went down in pain, while his teammates watched in horror.  He was carted off, and taken to a local hospital for an MRI, which revealed the torn ligament.

Although the Yankees didn't announce how long Rivera would be out, a torn ligament usually means a long recovery time, probably the entire season.
