Steps to a successful doctor visit

Preparing for your visit

  • Please arrive 15-20 minutes prior to your appointment time, to fill out all of the necessary forms.
  • Make a list of questions beforehand that you would like to ask.
  • Bring a list of all medications you are currently taking. Include all over-the-counter medications like aspirin and vitamins.
  • Bring all of your insurance information. Check with your insurance company to determine if a co-payment is required. If so, please be prepared to pay your co-payment at the time services are rendered.
  • Bring all of the names, phone numbers and addresses of your previous physicians.
  • Bring any pertinent medical information, records or test results. A list of any known food and/or drug allergies

During your visit

  • Your provider will ask you to talk about your reason for coming.
  • You will be asked about your medical history, including previous illnesses, surgeries, family history, health habits and other questions.
  • Your provider may recommend tests. When a test is suggested, your provider will tell you how long it will take and how you will be notified of the results.
  • Your provider may make a diagnosis during the exam, telling you what you have, what causes it and the treatment options available to you.
  • If the services of a specialist are needed, we will make arrangements for you.
  • A follow-up appointment will be scheduled.

Questions to ask your doctor

  • What is the most important change I can make to improve my health?
  • What screening tests are appropriate for a person my age?
  • How is my blood pressure?
  • Do I have a healthy weight?
  • Do you advise me to adjust my diet or exercise plan in any way?
  • Is it time for me to have a cholesterol test?
  • Should I take a daily aspirin to prevent heart attack or stroke?
  • Are any of my current medications no longer needed?
