(USA TODAY) -- Joan Rivers knows how to stage an old-fashioned p.r. stunt/reality TV moment.
The author/comedian handcuffed herself to a customer's shopping cart at a Costco on Tuesday in Burbank to protest the store, which is not selling her new book, I Hate Everything ... Starting With Me, reports AP.
A camera crew was conveniently on hand to film the Fashion Police host, 79, as she complained to customers, using a bullhorn. Rivers says Costco banned her book because of several racy jokes on the back cover, so she staged a protest in Burbank against what she called unjust censorship.
"Costco should not be like Nazi Germany," yelled Rivers. "Next thing they'll be burning the Bible."
And, "Costco, who sells condoms by the pallet, who sells Paula Deen books and -- which is not good for their customers' health -- they decided to ban my book. This is a First Amendment violation."
She added, "This is a store that sells 300 rolls of toilet paper at the same time, and I say any customer that buys 300 rolls of toilet paper deserves a funny book to sit on the toilet and read."
Burbank city spokesman Drew Sugars says the store manager called police, who sent officers to the scene, reports AP. They ended up escorting Rivers from the store, and she and her crew left without incident. There were no citations or arrests.
