NEW YORK -- The Fire Department says two people were hurt after a vehicle at a Manhattan garage plunged about 40 feet down an elevator shaft.
The accident occurred at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at a Hertz garage at 76th Street and First Avenue.
WCBS TV says a parking attendant pulled the SUV into an elevator on the 5th floor -- but it wasn't there.
It landed upside down after falling to the first floor.
An attendant in the elevator also was hurt. Both attendants are in stable condition at New York Weill-Cornell Medical Center.
Alex Spatt of Manhattan was on his way to the New York Sports Club next door when he saw firefighters pull out the car. He said the roof was badly crushed.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
