WEST PALM BEACH, -- A man attacked by a shark in the Bahamas has been released from a West Palm Beach hospital.
Jim Abernethy, 52, walked out of St. Mary's Medical Center on Friday, having escaped any serious damage to his nerves or arteries.
The dive boat operator was bit on the right arm by a reef shark Wednesday, just north of West End, Bahamas.
Abernethy said he was tending to the bait crates during a dive in the Bahamas when a shark mistook him for the bait and bit his arm. Abernethy said his crew packed and wrapped the wound before the U.S. Coast airlifted him to the hospital Wednesday.
He appeared in good spirits when he spoke to the media for the first time since the attack.
"They took immediate care of that and, well, look," Abernethy exclaimed. "Here I am, smiling. I feel wonderful, and I can't wait to get back in the water."
One of his doctors says he's "lucky, very lucky."
