LAS VEGAS, NV (AP) - A federal official says the death of a woman who jumped from the Hoover Dam bypass bridge is the first known suicide since the sweeping arch opened in October 2010 linking Nevada and Arizona.
U.S. Bureau of Reclamation spokeswoman Rose Davis said Monday that Hoover Dam police tried to persuade the woman not to jump from a pedestrian walkway on Saturday.
Her body was recovered Sunday from the Colorado River, some 900 feet below.
The woman's identity wasn't immediately released.
Davis says the suicide is the first that federal officials know of at the Michael O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.
The 1,900-foot-long span crosses Black Canyon just downstream from Hoover Dam.
The suicide was first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
