St. Petersburg, Florida - Sunday was the final day of a 60 mile journey where supporters and survivors came together in the fight against breast cancer.
The Tampa Bay Breast Cancer 3-Day walk wrapped up Sunday afternoon with $4 million going to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
10 Connects had our very own team, headed by anchors Reggie and Heather who joined the 1,500 other walkers.
St. Petersburg resident Ryan Lynch, 29, walked in honor of his girlfriend, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. He remembers the day when doctors told them her fate.
"It's not something you expect on a Tuesday afternoon," said Lynch.
Now one year later, Lynch's girlfriend Amy is hopefully cancer-free. "She just finished her last treatment last weekend," said Lynch.
Since his girlfriend was not strong enough to walk with him this past weekend, Lynch did the 60 mile walk alone.
"Walking gets you tired, but then you see a 10-year survivor blow past you and it motivates you," said Lynch.
That also motivates University of Tampa student Nikki Martin, 21. "I've been affected by breast cancer. My grandmother had it," said Martin.
She walked to support the cause. What she didn't know is that someone special was waiting for at the finish line. Martin's boyfriend Craig flew in from Massachusetts to surprise her with his support.
Then, hand in hand, they crossed the finish line together.
And so did Lynch and his girlfriend. Just before the end, she joined him to walk the last 20 yards to the finish line together.
"I was there for her every step of the way. She's been there for me every step of the way. That's what it is all about," said Lynch.
