Cell phone hidden fees and charges are becoming a big problem for consumers. That's why some companies are now being held accountable for it and being ordered to pay back some of the millions of dollars they've taken from customers.
It's called "cramming." It's a term that's used to describe extra line item fees showing up on your phone bill. These are usually for things like voice mail services. You have to examine your phone bill line by line to spot them. Hence the word "cramming."
The practice has long been associated with landlines but now it's a big problem with wireless phones too.
Florida took action against Verizon and Alltel over the fees associated with "Free Ringtones." Click here to see the $1.5 million settlement.
We checked with Georgia's Attorney General. No action has been taken against companies for cramming on wireless bills and the Georgia Public Service Commission does not regulate wireless companies.
If you get charged on your cell phone bill for a service or product you didn't order, contact the company that placed the charge on your bill. There's supposed to be an 800 number to call. Then contact your wireless provider to tell them about it. If you can't get it resolved, you can file a complaint with the FCC. Click here to do that.
